Culp Residence
This project presented a multitude of challenges including strict community rules and regulations that limited the final building height and which materials we could use. Furthermore, as a waterfront residence looking west, the need for shade from the harsh sun had to be balanced with providing the best maximum views.
To maximize the interior room heights while still complying with the height restrictions, the design minimizes the second floor thickness by using steel beams and hollow core concrete planks, usually seen in commercial construction. We wanted to minimize the “big box” appearance usually created by these restrictions and create a more horizontal appearance. We achieved this through a series of "floating" beams that extend the visual lines of the house. These beams along with a deep overhang over the master bedroom suite create deep shade on the waterfront-facing west facade.
